Parked in between HESCO's, to decrease the threat from indirect fire. Q-30 was already heavily used in the anti Taliban conflict over Uruzgan. The Apache belonged 301sq "Redskins", based at Gilze Rijen air base (the Netherlands) to during its deployement to Tarin Kowt it was assigned to the 1(NLD)ATF of the NLD(TFU), in full: the First Netherlands Air Task Force, Task Force Uruzgan.

In the middle of nowhere of the province of Uruzgan, Afghanistan, a Dutch foward operating base, Camp Hadrian in Deh Rawod was established. The base, very often under attack of Taliban had a life-line with Dutch Chinooks and armed protection of Apaches which were based at Tarin Kowt (some 35 miles from Camp Hadrian, as the crow flies). Here D-661 landed at the Camp, to pick up a rotation of Task Force Uruzgan military. They were going home!

The OH-58D(I) Kiowa Warrior is equipped with the most distinctive feature of the Kiowa family, the Mast Mounted Sight (MMS). This MMS is a kind of beach ball perched on top of the rotor blades that is equipped with a gyro-stabilized television system (TVS), a thermal imaging system (TIS), and a laser range finder/designator (LRF/D). This five-four-one was built by Bell as a OH-58A with serial 70-15102, was then converted to OH-58D with serial 83-24138. After its Afghanistan deployment it was preserved at Fort Campbell (KY) by May 2022.

This Chinook was delivered to the USArmy as CH-47A with serial 66-00101 and accepted on 9 Sep'66. It was converted to CH-47D with serial 85-24348 and redelivered on 27 May'86. The helicopter then served A/2-159th AVN from Apr'94 to Oct'97 and was transferred to C/159th AVN on 16 Oct'97 up to Jun'03. From 2006, the CH-47D appeared in Afghanistan where it was sadly lost in an accident on 1 Jul'10. It was reported that the accident was not related to enemy fire, no further details known. Strikingly, I pictured 348 some two years earlier at near exact the same spot! See my other photo here

This Lynx flew first on 9 Jul'79, it was retained by Westland for flight trials. The Lynx was delivered as an AH1 to the Army Air Corps on 22 Feb'84. It was later converted to AH7. Served the AAC up to 1 Dec'11. On that day, the Lynx suffered an in flight fire due to a hydraulic leak. The pilot performed an emergency landing in a field near Tatenhausen (Germany), about 16 km from RAF Gütersloh. The crew abandoned the helo which was consumed by fire before the local fire brigade arrived. Great to have a click here at AirHistory of the helicopter while parked at the platform of Kandahar.
