In the middle of nowhere of the province of Uruzgan, Afghanistan, a Dutch foward operating base, Camp Hadrian in Deh Rawod was established. The base, very often under attack of Taliban had a life-line with Dutch Chinooks and armed protection of Apaches which were based at Tarin Kowt (some 35 miles from Camp Hadrian, as the crow flies). Here D-661 landed at the Camp, to pick up a rotation of Task Force Uruzgan military. They were going home!

Once Canadian Air Force CH-147 with serial 147003 (c/n B725/G003). The Chinook was sold to the Netherlands and converted by Boeing to CH-47D from 1994, it received a new US serial 93-0661 and conversion number M3661 and company number B725. The helicopter was delivered to the KLu on 3 August 1996. This Chinook deployed with the Dutch 1(NL) Air Task Force to Kandahar in 2006.

D-661 was given the name "Red October", being the only RNLAF Chinook that has ever made a water landing in the United States of America (USA). The water landing was not really a success - water having reached the flight control computers causing flight control difficulties, so they named this Chinook after Tom Clancy's book - "The Hunt for Red October".

Built as a US Army CH-47C with cn B725 and serial 74-22060 but delivered Mar-1975 to the Canadian AF as CH-147 147003, in Jan-1992 nominally back to the US Army as 93-0661 for conversion to CH-47D with new cn M3661 and to the Netherlands AF as D-661 taken on charge Aug-1996. Seen here during one of the rare sunny breaks between the rain showers on this Open Day. It carries a NATO badge on the fin.
