This enlarged successor to the Lancaster was developed with longer range Pacific sorties in mind but arrived too late to see active service during WWII. This particular aircraft spent most of her service life with various maintenance units before being struck off charge in 1963 and transferred to the RAF Museum in 1968.

In the early 1950 the adoption of a prone pilot was thought to offer the advantages of reduced drag (through elimination of the cockpit bulge) and better resistance to g-force swings when lying flat. In practice the difficulty of operating the controls outweighed these gains, especially after the development of special g-suits, and this plane was never flown solo from the forward, prone position.

Out of desperation the Japanese adapted a Ki-61 'Tony' fighter to carry a radial engine resulting in one of the best interceptors used by the Japanese during WWII. It combined excellent power and manoeuvrability but was limited at high-altitudes due to the lack of a supercharger. This is the only example extant and is on display at the RAF Museum Cosford.

This example was selected for performance evaluation trials and shipped back to the UK for testing by the A&AEE (for which she was allocated the serial ZD485). The ground-breaking design concept of the Lightning was so revolutionary that there were serious doubts within the British aviation establishment as to whether it would even get off the ground, never mind become the front-line fighter for the RAF. Two (Prototype) P1 experimental aircraft were commissioned that went on to vindicate the design and pave the way for the superb Lightning and its nearly 30 years in RAF service.
