This Lancaster was built in Canada, arriving in England in January 1945. However, after only six months it was returned to Canada and converted to a maritime reconnaissance and rescue role along with various periods in storage and close scrapes with the axeman. In 1986 it crossed the Atlantic again and is now on display in AirSpace at the IWM Duxford.

First time for me to see and photograph an autogiro. Autogiros have rotors instead of wings but unlike helicopters they are not powered so unable to hover. The rotor spins around as the autogiro is driven forward by the propeller and generates lift. Autogiros were used by the RAF to check and/or calibrate radar stations as they were able to fly in very tight circles. Indeed at one point the RAF's Radar Calibration Unit was based at Duxford for some time during WWII. Previously G-ACUU

XH648 was originally built as a B1 and delivered to 57 Squadron at Honington in 1959. Shortly afterwards it went to HP at Radlett for conversion to B1A status, which involved fitting ECM equipment and new engines. In 1965 it was converted by HP into a two-point tanker, making it a B(K)1A, and so served in its final years as a fueller until retirement to Duxford in June 1976.

Built in 1934 she went on to serve with Fleet Air Arm 802 Sqn in the Mediterranean as the C-Flight commander's aircraft, hence the yellow markings. Rediscovered in 1972 on a rubbish dump in Kent, corroded but more or less complete, she was acquired by Aero Vintage leading to this remarkable restoration.

This is my take on the classic 'Biz-jet plus Ferrari' shot! This immaculate old biplane is pictured on display in one of the hangars at Duxford along with some other period transport.
