The Ohka (Cherry Blossom) was a purpose-built, rocket-powered kamikaze plane. Its short range made its missions almost as deadly for the crews of the launching G4M2 'Betty' bombers as for the suicide pilots themselves, but a few US ships were sunk or damaged by Ohka attacks in the spring of 1945. This machine was coded I-13 on the nose when it was captured on Okinawa. It carries the number 10461 on the wing root which I presume is the serial number.

This research aircraft was built to test the slow speed handling of a sharply swept wing as used on the English Electric Lightning. The wing could be mounted at 50, 60 or 69 degrees of sweep and the tail section with low-set tailplane seen here could be replaced with a T-tail. The undercarriage was not retractable.

The M.1 fighter was an advanced aircraft when it first flew in 1916. Due to wariness about its monoplane configuration and landing speed, it was built in limited numbers and only saw some frontline service in the Middle East and Balkans theatres of WWI. This replica made a few flights in 1987. It was then acquired by the RAF Museum, given an original Le Rhône engine and painted as an aircraft of an instructor flying school of the RFC, C4994.

The TSR-2 exemplifies one of the saddest episodes in the long history of British aviation, leading to this famous quote from renowned aircraft designer Sir Sydney Camm "All modern aircraft have four dimensions: span, length, height and politics. TSR-2 simply got the first three right." This aircraft never actually flew, rather had almost been completed when the programme was cancelled. One of the absolute highlights of the wonderful RAF museum at Cosford.

When the dust of WWII settled, this was one of only two surviving Junkers Ju 88s. Note the familiar BMW logo on the BMW 801 engines, and the antenna forest on the nose of this early Ju-88R night fighter. It was flown to RAF Dyce in Scotland on 9 May 1943 by its defecting pilots, who were probably British agents. The capture of its Lichtenstein radar was of great interest to Allied intelligence.

The Germans made some extremely innovative and ground-breaking aeroplanes during WWII. The superfast designs have certainly deserved a lot of the limelight and whilst the superslow and nimble Storch doesn't have the glamour of the Schwalbe it fully deserves a place in the German aviation roll of honour!

In 1955 Auster modified two T.7s, (along with WE563) for use in the Commonwealth Trans-Antartic Expedition, to be known as the Auster Antartic. Alterations included better radio equipment, a larger tail surface, use of floats or skis as required and a bright-orange high-vis scheme. After returning from the expedition this airframe was allocated the non-flying serial 7602M and was delegated to display status paving the way for her eventual arrival at Cosford during 1989.

Ordered as a multi-engine pilot trainer to replace the Varsity, the relationship between the Jetstream and the RAF was rather troubled. This airframe was built in 1970 but didn't enter service until Mar. 77. Shortly after her replacement by the Beech 200 in March '04 she undertook her final flight to Cosford and into retirement.
