The sole SC1 was designed and built by Southern Cross Aviation and flown in 1961. It was intended to be a four-seat touring and training aircraft powered by a 180 h.p. Lycoming O-360. After 25 hours testing it was decided that it could not realistically compete with such as Cessna. It was stored and acquired by the Moorabbin-based museum for display for a period, before retuning to its Toowoomba Queensland birthplace. The "VH-SCA" markings were unofficial.

Designed by Ronald Gilbert Wheeler in 1974-75, probably the most basic 3-axis flying machine in the world, the "forefather" of all Australian ultralights, it was the first commercially available aircraft in its class. Equipped with an 8 hp lawnmower engine, it utilised rudder and elevator for yaw and pitch, and wing warping for roll. The Australian Government regulations of 1976 restricted flight operations of such aircraft to no higher than 300 feet AGL
