One of the most famous of all US aircraft is the Curtiss JN-4D Jenny, with more than 90% of American pilots during WWI receiving their primary instruction on the type. This example, one the first 25 of 585 built under licence by the Springfield Aircraft Corporation of Springfield, MA is on display at the Smithsonian NASM's Udvar-Hazy Center. It had been briefly in use as a US Air Service trainer at Hazelhurst Field at Mineola, NY before being acquired by the museum in Nov. 1918.

On March 7-8, 1949, 'Waikiki Beach' set a light-plane, nonstop distance record by flying from Honolulu, Hawaii to Teterboro, New Jersey. That is a distance of 4215 nautical miles, which is 315 nm more than the range of Concorde in the background! This is the fourth Bonanza built and is on display at the incredible NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

With "Department of Commerce" badge on rear fuselage. On 2nd October 1936, test pilot James G. Ray landed the AC-35 in a downtown park in Washington DC where it went on display. Later that month the aircraft was converted to drivable configuration by folding back the rotor blades over the fuselage, the propeller disengaged, the tailwheel put in gear and the front wheels used for steering. Ray then drove it through Washington to much acclaim to be handed over to the Aeronautics Branch at the main entrance of the Commerce Building.

The WWII service record of this P-51 was uneventful but post-war it was modified for long-distance flights and renamed 'Excaliber III'. It set many distance records including a 10.5 hour flight from Norway across the North Pole to Alaska. It is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

This aircraft was acquired after WWII by George Bogardus, who named her 'Little Gee Bee' and flew her from Oregon to Washington DC in 1947, 1949 and 1951. These three flights helped to convince officials in the CAA and the CAB that amateurs could design and build light aircraft that were safe, reliable, and capable of practical cross-country flights. Legislation was passed in 1952 that sanctioned the registration and operation of amateur-built aircraft, leading on to the founding of the EAA.

About 1,500 of various George models were produced. In combat over Taiwan, the Philippines, Okinawa, and the Japanese home islands, Shiden pilots acquitted themselves well but this excellent fighter appeared too late and in too few numbers to have any effect on Japan's fortunes in the air war. This example on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center is one of only four still extant and wears the colours and markings of the 343rd Kokutai based at Omura in 1945.

Based on Cierva technology, the Kellett Autogiro Corporation's KD-1 first flew in 1934. Small numbers were built but the military O-60 did not make it as an army observation aircraft. A KD-1 went to Japan in 1939 and a Japanese variant, the Kayaba Ka-1/Ka-2, was deployed on anti-submarine patrols from 1944.

This helicopter entered Marine service in 1961 serving in units around the US until retirement in 1970 and storage at MASDC. It is on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center as YP-13, a significant aircraft assigned to HMM-163 'Ridge Runners'. This combat unit operated in the Da Nang area of Vietnam and became one of the most decorated Marine helicopter squadrons of that war.

This Bird Dog was delivered in Jan. 1952 and served primarily as a training platform accumulating more than 10,000 flying hours. The aircraft is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center and has been restored as 'Mobile Miss', an O-1A that was assigned to the 74th Aviation Company (Aerial Surveillance) near Saigon in 1972.

'Enola Gay' at the Smithsonian Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center needs no introduction. I fully understand the overarching imperative of the Americans to end WWII as quickly as possible with as few casualities as possible on their side. I get that completely, yet after visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park & Museum a few years ago I found this a very sombre and thought-provoking exhibit.

This FB-5 is on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. This Hawk was assigned to Navy Squadron VF-1, aboard the USS Langley, in Jan. 1927. After eight months it was transferred to VF-6B aboard the USS Saratoga and then to VF-3B at San Diego in April 1928. Afer some modifications it was assigned to Marine fighter squadron VF-6M on March, 1930, serving briefly with that unit until being stricken from the Navy inventory in July 1930.

The Aeronca C-2 was the first truly light aeroplane certified by the Bureau of Aeronautics and produced in quantity in the US. This C-2 is the production prototype, first flying on 20th October, 1929. After the establishment of the National Air Museum in 1946, Aeronca answered a call for historic aircraft so this C-2 is now on display at the NASM's Udvar-Hazy Center.

From 9th Aug. to 10th Dec. 1947, the 'City of Washington' & 'City of The Angels' (now at the Piper Aviation Museum in Lock Haven, PA) circumnavigated the globe, the first time for a light personal aircraft.
