Seaplane variant of the Curtiss Jenny. Note the beautifully crafted central float. Wind tunnel research was employed in the succesful redesign of the aircraft. The N-9 was apparently the first seaplane to perform a looping.

This upper walkway is cleared by the Udvar-Hazy staff 30 min before the rest of the museum closes. I hung on for as long as possible to try and get this shot people free but alas they kicked me off too soon. Still, it was really something to finally see the wonderful 'Dash 80' in person.

Horten craftsmen built this glider in 1944 at Göttingen. It probably first flew as a two-seat Horten IIIg but was modified into a single-seat glider, with special test apparatus installed to measure angle-of-attack, yaw and speed, leading to the change of designation to IIIh. The British found this glider at Rottweil, approximately 100 km (60 miles) southwest of Stuttgart in 1945 'in perfect condition'. Precisely what happened between then and it becoming part of the NASM collection is unknown.

Of the 1,261 Crusaders built, 73 were modified to RF-8G reconnaissance models. This F-8 was delivered as an F8U-1P and spent it's first seven years with the Marines flying 400 combat hours in SE Asia. It was the last operational USN F-8 and the total of 7,475.2 flight hours is the most of any USN F-8. Now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

The USAF retired it's two Presidential transport UH-13J's in 1967 and transferred them to museums the following year. The Smithsonian received this example, which was the first to carry President Eisenhower, and is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center. The other UH-131J was donated to the National Museum of the USAF in Dayton, OH.

The two-seat Model 47B was the first commercial evolution of Bell's pioneering Model 30 and this example, the 36th built, is on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center. This rather unassuming helicopter has actually a rather impressive pedigree: it set the World's hovering record of fifty hours, fifty seconds and its last flight occurred in Dec. 2004, more than 57 years after its first flight to make it the longest-flying helicopter in history.

The Globe Swift is considered to be one of the classic post-WWII US general aviation aircraft designs due to it's beauty and sporty flying characteristics. This example is on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

This is the first X-35 and was originally the X-35A but later modified to include the shaft-driven lift-fan propulsion system (an example is on display behind the aircraft) for testing of the STOVL concept. This aircraft was the first in history to achieve a short takeoff, level supersonic dash and vertical landing in a single flight. Now on display at the Smithsonian NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

Accepted by the Marine Corps on March 14, 1967, this Sea Knight, or more affectionately known as the Phrog to the Marines, flew it's last flight on August 1, 2015. That was the day it was flown to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center for prominent display. The helicopter will eventually be transferred to the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico.

The 1A "Gulfhawk" is a one-off aeroplane comprising an amalgamation between the Curtiss Navy F6C-4 and the Army P-1 Hawk with a Wright Cyclone engine. The aircraft was primarily used to promote military aviation to the public during the inter-war years and is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

This Fw 190, on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center, was built in late 1943 as the A-7 fighter 640049. After suffering combat damage it was repaired and remanufactured into an Fw 190 F-8 fighter-bomber with a new Werk-Nummer. The conversion involved fitting a new wing and bomb racks to the original fuselage and adding armour plate around and beneath the cockpit. Reissued to the Luftwaffe, the aircraft flew on the Eastern Front, probably with SG 2 based in Hungary in Oct. 1944.

This is the second Do 335 A-0 built and is now a stunning exhibit at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian NASM. Allied forces found the Do-335 when they overran Oberpfaffenhofen airfield on 29th April 1945. After VE Day it was shipped to the USA aboard the British aircraft carrier HMS Reaper, along with other captured German aircraft and equipment for technology evaluation. Following USN testing from 1945-48 the Navy transferred the Pfeil (Arrow) to the museum's collection in 1961

This Lysander is one of 225 Mk. IIIs built in Canada during 1942. It served with the RCAF as 2346, most probably as a target tug or communication aircraft. This example was discovered in a farmer's field in Edmonton, Alberta, during the early 1970s but has been beautifully restored and is now on display in RAF 138 Squadron markings. During WWII this squadron was based at Tempsford flying clandestine missions for the SOE supplying resistance forces and transporting agents to and from occupied Europe.

Larry Bell envisioned a thriving market for personal helicopters would emerge after WWII and to be part of it he created the Bell 30 Ship 1A. It proved that a practical personal helicopter was feasible and it led directly to the Bell Model 47. This is just one of many ground-breaking exhibits on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

The PA-18 Super Cub was a strengthened, modification of the original J-3 Cub. The Atomic Energy Commission operated this PA-18 in its uranium exploration program carried out in the Western US during the 1950s. The AEC was the sole owner of N1872P during its operational life but in Feb. 1961, after 1,487 hours of flight time, it was retired and is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.
