The aircraft was primarily used to promote military aviation to the public during the inter-war years and is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

Built in 1929 as the Curtiss Long-Distance Hawk I demonstrator, a variant of the P-6E fighter, and registered NR636E. Rebuilt after a crash as the Hawk IA and delivered to aerobatic pilot Al Williams as NR982V in August 1930. Named Gulfhawk and painted orange when Williams was contracted by Gulf Oil in 1933. Replaced by the Grumman G-22 Gulfhawk II in 1936. Restored from 1958-62 and subsequently flown by Hollywood stunt pilot Frank Tallman. Donated to the NASM in 1969.
