Saab's J21R jet fighter retained the long legs of the J21A propeller plane, and compared to the otherwise rather similar Vampire it seems to stand twice as high! This machine is actually a surviving J21A, 21286, modified to represent the extinct jet variant. 64 J21Rs were originally constructed and they were soon converted to A21R attack aircraft.

More a patrol and training aircraft than a fully fledged bomber, the Ca.313 attracted large orders from France and Britain, but these were cancelled by Italy's entry in WWII. A 900-aircraft German order also remained largely unfulfilled. Delivery of 84 machines to Sweden was completed, however. Here the Caproni was reputed to be a flying coffin. The cabin of this one does appear to be alarmingly flimsy, but this is only a non-airworthy flying replica, containing a few original parts. In fact I'm told the aircraft was quite good in itself, but suffering from unreliable engines and systems.

The Phönix D.I / D.II / D.III was an Austro-Hungarian WWI fighter based on the Hansa-Brandenburg D.I. Only a few D.IIIs were completed before the end of the war. Sweden purchased 17 Phönix 222s. An extraordinary feature of the expanded Flygvapenmuseum, opened on 12.6.10, are these Dakota remains. On 13.6.52, exactly 48 years before this photo, it was shot down over the Baltic by Soviet fighters while on a secret ELINT mission, checking installations in what are now Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Two Catalinas deployed on SAR after the incident were also attacked by Mig-15s. The Soviets denied the shoot-down till 1991 and the wreckage was not found until 2003

Equivalent to the RAF's Hunter F.4, Sweden had 120 F.50s delivered from 1954. This one is nicely positioned in the additional hall of the Flygvapenmuseum, newly opened just the day before this photo was taken

The experimental forerunner of the Draken was the Saab 210, known as Lilldraken (Little Dragon). First flown in 1951, it was powered by an Armstrong-Siddeley Adder turbojet and was used on delta development work till 1956

During 1953 a standard Varsity from the production run of 163, WJ900, was selected for conversion at Hurn to Sigint capability for Sweden (and was replaced by an extra aircraft for the RAF, XD366). Two Canberras were also obtained for similar purposes. The arrival of two Caravelles in 1971 rendered these aircraft obsolete and the Varsity was fortunately set aside for preservation, along with one of the Canberras

Designated Sk14 in Sweden, the NA-16 advanced trainer was the progenitor of the famous AT-6 Texan / Harvard - note smaller engine, mixed construction and rounded rudder. Landing gear was fixed. This is an impressive reconstruction from an Australian CA-7 Wirraway, A20-223, and a Canadian NA-64 Yale.
