'Enola Gay' at the Smithsonian Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center needs no introduction. I fully understand the overarching imperative of the Americans to end WWII as quickly as possible with as few casualities as possible on their side. I get that completely, yet after visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park & Museum a few years ago I found this a very sombre and thought-provoking exhibit.

B-50D of 43 Bomb Wing, 15th Air Force, wearing the name "Thunderbird" on its nose making a very low level run at Yeadon during the 1953 SSAFA air show. Built as a B-50A, it had later been modified to B-50D standard including fitment of underwing tanks. This was the last rotation of an SAC B-50 wing through the UK before full replacement by B-47 Stratojets.

The B-50 was the last propeller driven bomber to be delivered to the USAF and although superficailly similar to the B-29 the large numer of modifications caused the redesignation. After being replaced by B-47s in front-line service many B-50s were stripped of defensive arnament and converted by the addition of Doppler & weather radar, atmospheric samplers and bomb-bay fuel tanks to weather recon aircraft. This was the last WB-50 to be retired in 1965 and arrived at the National Museum of the USAF in 1968.

This nose section was recovered from the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland (presumably the rest of the aircraft had been blown to smithereens!). It is slowly being restored at the Museum of Aviation and will eventually be part of a diorama exhibit paying tribute to all the 'Rosie the Riveters' and they work they did.

49-0389 was the last KB-50J to fly when it was ferried to the USAF Museum at Wright Patterson AFB on February 17, 1965. Thirty years later, in late 1995, it was disassembled and moved to MacDill AFB in Tampa, Florida, where it was displayed with the false identity "0-80114" (48-0114). It is seen here being disassembled for shipment in February 2018 to the AMC Museum at Dover AFB, where it will be restored and put on display.
