Roy Liggett posing with the Cessna CR-2 racer. The CR-2 was modified from the CR-1 which was too difficult to fly. Here at the 1933 Miami air races, Liggett won the Colonel Green Cup in the 500 cubic inch race according to Wikipedia. The Warner Scarab engine fitted was 499 cubic inch. The aircraft crashed later that year. Photo by: Gleason Waite Romer / Miami-Dade Public Library

This photo is said to show a hijacked DC-3 at Key West in October 1960, but obviously this is a C-46. Many hijackings occurred and although Cubana absorbed Aerovias Q during 1959, a 1960 date might be possible. Ex 42-107292, this airframe was not acquired by Aerovias Q until February 1959. Despite the word 'Bienvenidos' on the terminal, this does seem to be Key West. Photo from: Monroe County Public Library

Not to be confused with Aerovias Quisqueyana, Aerovias Q was a Cuban airline with the Q presumably standing for founder Manuel Quevedo Jaureguízar's family name. It ran a Havana - Key West scheduled service from July 1947. Ex 42-93736, CU-T-1000 served with another Cuban airline, Expreso Aereo Inter-Americano, before joining Aerovias Q. To Haitian air force as 3681 in 1954. Operated by CoHata. Reported stored at Port-au-Prince. Photo from: Monroe County Public Library

Both Sikorsky S-37 aircraft were operated by American International Airways, which was associated with NYRBA, the short-lived New York, Rio & Buenos Aires Line. Reportedly the other one operated in Argentina as R-1283 Southern Star. This airframe became NR942M, a seaplane that undertook a failed flight around the world - see other photos. VT-9 is based at NAS Meridian, Mississippi. As it is quite a distance inland from the Gulf of Mexico the squadron would deploy aircraft to NAS Pensacola for carrier qualification training using the USS Lexington operating off the Florida coast. The Lexington has been retired since 1991, and now all Training Command carrier quals are conducted aboard fleet aircraft carriers either offshore the Pacific or Atlantic coasts.

This T-2C is clearing the landing area aboard the USS Lexington and taxiing towards the starboard (right) catapult. The T-2C was the basic jet trainer for Naval Aviation for decades. Basic jet carrier qualification consisted of at least two touch and go approaches (hook up) and at least four arrested landings. Note the Foreign Object Damage (FOD) screens on the intakes. These were attached after each arrested landing and removed before the catapult launch.

A student Naval Aviator taxiing his T-2C towards the starboard (right) catapult during basic jet training carrier qualifications. All carrier qualification flights are solo, with no instructor in the aircraft. Note the FOD screen on the intake. This was attached after landing and removed prior to the catapult launch. The T-2 was susceptible to foreign object damage to the engines due to the low ground clearance of the intakes.
