Aircraft fitted with a Coffrin-Pike aerial advertising lighting array under the wings at the time of the photo. NC229M was one of the Boeing 80s acquired by Reeve Aleutian Airways. Written off at Anchorage on March 21, 1943. Also reported to have been written off at Sterling, Illinois, in July 1932. The FAA cancelled the registration in 1948 which would seem to confirm the 1943 accident. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Used for two eastbound transatlantic crossings in 1931 and 1934. The first was flown by Capt Holger Hoérüs with passenger Otto Hillig, of Liberty, NY, who owned it. The plane was named after the town. The destination was Copenhagen but fog forced a diversion to Germany. The second flight was by Polish brothers Bolesław and Jozef Adamowicz. Designed by Georgian expat Mikheil Grigorashvili (anglicised as Michael Gregor) and built by the Canadian Car and Foundry. It was tested by the RCAF against the Grumman F3F and while it outperformed the Grumman, the Gregor had no military equipment fitted. CF-BMB competed in the All-American air race from New York to Miami in 1940 and it appears also in 1941. An effort to sell the type to Mexico was barred by the Canadian government. CF-BMB cancelled from the register in 1950. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Demonstrated at the ELTA exhibition in Amsterdam in 1919 as G-5414, G-EAAF was shipped to the US in May 1920 with Handley Page intending to set up an airline there, but this was thwarted in court and the aircraft was impounded. It was taken over by Curtiss which had good relations with HP at this time, and is seen here during an event at Curtiss Field in 1922. It apparently survived here into 1925. The small Westland Wasp helicopter was designated AH-12 by the Dutch navy, reflecting the fact that it could attack with torpedoes but relied on target information from its mother ship, in this case HNLMS Van Nes, a Van Speijk-class frigate. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

A successful WWI twin-engined fighter? Crewed by one pilot and two gunners, the R.11 did well as a bomber escort in 1918. An American assessment says: 'Fast, good climb and endurance.' Morale was high in the six squadrons flying the type by the end of the war and some of the best gunners were posted to these units. The rudder reads 'Cau XI A3'; the A was for reconnaissance, and the alleged 'R.11 C3' fighter designation does not seem to have existed. 405 is the poids utile (useful load), of course in kilograms. This might perhaps be an aircraft given to Britain for evaluation. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
