This aircraft is the former VH-HEP, built by Ron Robertson of Mildura in the 1980s. It was transferred to the RAAus Register on 16 May 2001. Its current owner flew it the 360 miles from Nelson (near Mount Gambier) to Broken Hill for the AAAA Auster Rally, then home again. Two hours safe endurance at about 50 kt meant a lot of stops along the way, including a night with its builder.

The spartan but unfortunately not original rear cockpit of this historic Moth. This was the first Moth to be exported from the UK, being first registered in Australia as G-AUAE on 5 November 1925 to the Civil Aviation Branch, Department of Defence. It was re-registered as VH-UAE in 1930. In later years it was re-built to DH-60G standard and is preserved in immaculate condition today as the oldest aeroplane still airworthy in Australia.

It came to Australia in 2006, being registered VH-UUV on 9 February that year (see my photo of it in that guise). Exported back to the USA and then again to Australia, this time as VH-FNS. New Guinea? Northern Australia? No: it's the Temora Aviation Museum, the only place in the world where you can regularly see an airworthy Boomerang and Hudson together, bringing back memories of those desperate days of 1942-45. (The Hudson is VH-KOY.)
