The S.73 was the civil counterpart of the SM.81 Pipistrello bomber. Sabena and ČSA were the only export customers. Seven S.73s were built in Belgium. Italian-built OO-AGP was delivered to Sabena early in 1936 and destroyed at Brussels - Haren during the German invasion in May 1940. She was painted orange on the outbreak of war in September 1939 to signify a neutral airliner, like the Danish Fw 200 Condor, OY-DAM, in the foreground. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

The Kawasaki C-5 or KDC-5 was a two-seat courier aircraft derived from the Ki-5 fighter. The only example was operated by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper. It crashed in Manchuria in November 1935. Delivered in January 1937, VH-UYZ was cancelled from the register when its certificate of airworthiness was not renewed in 1940. The Aeronca 100 was built in Britain, a licensed version of the Aeronca C.3. Three of the first five Aeronca 100s came to Australia but that was it and no more followed. All three were gone by 1949. Don't shoot please, we are small neutrals! In addition to the large country titles, some neutral airliners received an all-orange paint job after the outbreak of WWII, including OY-DAM which was seized by the British at Shoreham on 9 April 1940, the day the Germans occupied Denmark. It became G-AGAY and DX117, crashing on 12 July 1941. OO-AGZ is a Savoia-Marchetti S.73 of Sabena. DC-3 PH-ALU Uil of KLM was damaged beyond repair here by German bombs on 10 May 1940. It's past five o'clock so the Vertol 107 prototype has probably just returned from its amphibious demonstration on a nearby lake. The same aircraft also visited Europe in 1959. On the rear fuselage it reads: 'Prototype of US Marine HRB-1 - Swedish Hkp4'. The HRB-1 designation was changed into CH-46A. Photo by: Joop van Bilsen / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The Pander E was a sport and training sesquiplane first flown in 1926. PH-AFN was owned by Co van Tijen, export manager of Van Houten's chocolate factory. He flew solo to the Netherlands East Indies in this light aircraft, Adelaar (eagle) in 1930. He became general manager at Fokker in 1935. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

KLM's first own aircraft were Fokkers but four DH.9Bs were added in 1921. These converted bombers could carry two passengers. Researcher Herman Dekker notes that construction number H9187 is unconfirmed. The aircraft might be ex G-EAUQ (H9125) instead of G-EAUO (H9187). Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Massive public attention for the first Soviet jet to land at Schiphol. Unfortunately for the spectators, Captain Pyotr Soldatev did not need to deploy his three brake chutes. CCCP-L5442 crashed barely a month later in the Russian Far East and all 64 people on board lost their lives. Photo by: Harry Pot / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

VH-UFF was originally delivered to the RAAF as A33-1 but was in service only a few months when Holyman's Airways asked to buy it to replace a crashed DH86. Holyman's had it for a year then it became ANA. In June 1938 -UFF was transferred to Airlines of Australia and was still with AOA when it was impressed by the RAAF as A33-3. During the war it was operated by Guinea Airways (as VH-UFF again). In 1956 it was sold in New Caledonia as F-OAVG. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

'Three seaplanes from De Mok air station landed on the Amstel River near the gasworks [former Zuidergasfabriek] this morning. It was not an emergency, the aeroplane pilots very calmly taxied to the Amstel Bridge before turning back. It was just a routine exercise. After cruising around for half an hour, they took off again near the Amstellaan [now Vrijheidslaan, bridge there built in 1932] and flew to Schellingwoude naval air station.' The F.III was a notable early airliner of which some 66 examples were built. Uniquely the pilot sat alongside the slightly offset engine, 'burning on one side and freezing on the other'. Used by then for sightseeing flights, this airframe was lost on 24 July 1928 here at Rotterdam when the pilot made too short a take-off run, hit a ship's masts and crashed into the Waalhaven harbour. One of the passengers drowned. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

A9-4 crashed at Norfolk Bay, Tasmania, on March 19, 1930, while operating from the seaplane carrier HMAS Albatross. The RAAF had nine Seagulls IIIs. They were replaced by Seagull Vs (very similar to the Walrus). The HMAS Albatross was handed over to the Royal Navy in 1938 and name later adopted for the naval air station at Nowra.
