Martin Mariner of VPB-214 on beaching gear at its NAS Norfolk base. This anti-submarine warfare squadron became operational here on 23 January 1944 but its strength was reduced from twelve to nine aircraft on 1 October. In January 1945 it was sent to NAS Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone, for ASW patrols on the Pacific side. The squadron was disbanded at Norfolk on 18 June 1945, having left its aircraft behind at Coco Solo, and 48151 was lost off Coco Solo two days later on 20 June 1945. Quite a bit of damage resulting from a burst tyre during taxiing. The aircraft came in empty to pick up a load of flowers. Accident date was 17 February 1960, but incorrectly quoted by photo source as 17 September. This aircraft had another nose-over incident on 12 September 1960, at London-Gatwick. 'The German Casper airliner which arrived first in the prize flight to Gothenburg with captain Leif Lier.' An interesting puzzle in the Dutch national archives. According to the German Wikipedia, Caspar S.I D-292 won a competition in Gothenburg in 1923 (during the ILUG exhibition), and D-292 was sold to Leif Lier from Oslo as N-23. The S.I reconnaissance floatplane was designed by Ernst Heinkel and it eventually became the Heinkel HE 1. It was produced in Sweden for the Swedish air force but also for German undercover training outfits. Photo by: Robert Sennecke / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The photo is thought to show PH-AGR carrying out KLM's very first scheduled fortnightly service on the Amsterdam - Batavia (Jakarta) route - the pilot does look like Evert van Dijk. The aircraft called at Palembang on 3 October 1930 on the way out and returned on 17 October. Certainly it is not yet named Reiger (heron) here. KNILM's three Dragon Rapides were acquired for aerial surveying in Netherlands New Guinea on behalf of the NNGPM oil company, and PK-AKU is seen here at the new Babo airfield. 'The first aeroplane to appear at Babo', in Netherlands New Guinea, likely visiting from a warship. This may or may not have been in January 1935 when the plane of HNLMS Flores visited Babo and a reconnaissance flight was made on behalf of the BPM oil company. The FBA company was continued as Hydravions Louis Schreck FBA after WWI, still producing small flying boats. Their first design with a tractor propeller, the FBA 19 was built in small numbers, including one three-seat FBA 19 HMT.3 amphibian (Hydravion Mixte de Transport) which was delivered to Air Union. It is seen here on the Thames at Hammersmith. The pilot, wearing a life jacket, is Maurice Noguès. Photo from: Air Union
