An F2H Banshee of VF-11, flown by Ensign Buffkin, photographed over an enemy airfield. The T tail code evidently belonged to CVG-101 on the carrier Kearsarge (and not to CVG-1). A naval port, Wonsan was continuously bombed and shelled for much of the Korean War, and the airfield was unusable. From 2013, Wonsan was developed as a resort, Kim Jong-un having spent his childhood years here, and a civil terminal at the airbase received its first flight on 24 September 2015 - see the photos of our contributor Robbie Shaw who was on board. The date is given as 7 July 1946, the day the first XF-11 made its only flight. A propeller went in reverse pitch in flight and pilot Howard Hughes was badly injured in the resulting crash. In the background is the Lockheed Constellation prototype, 43-10309, ex NX25600. Hughes had purchased that aircraft for $20,000. Lockheed bought it back and converted it to the Super Constellation prototype in 1950. Photo from: University of Nevada Las Vegas

This was a Hurricane converted for catapult launch off merchant ships. These aircraft were essentially disposable and would ditch in the sea when fuel was low. Whether this happened to Z4852 is unclear. It is shown as lost at sea in February 1942 but it had a career after that date as confirmed by the photo. It finished with a training unit. The BuNo is not fully readable but we believe this can only be 124594, from a first batch of seven HUP-1 Retrievers delivered to the US Navy from February 1949. Still with HU-2, this airframe was lost on 22 May 1953 in a crash landing south of Ocean City, Maryland, following engine failure. The photo was circulated by the Diamond Chain Company in Indianapolis which supplied chains to Piasecki. Photo from: Indiana Historical Society / Piasecki
