Taken out of service at Heathrow after its last service from JFK on 12th August 2000, G-BOAA was moved by road and sea to East Fortune in 2004. The manner of its dismantling caused a lot of consternation at the time, the wings being sawn off in order to move the airframe across London to load onto a barge on the River Thames, which then took about five days to sail up the North Sea coast.

This Twin Pioneer CC.1 served the RAF as XM961 between 1959 and 1967 with 230 Sqdn at Benson and 21 Sqdn in the Far East. It was then moved to Halton for use by No 1 School of Technical Training and allocated 7978M. In 1973 it became one of eight acquired by Flight One of Staverton. They had experience of maintaining JF Airlines' fleet of this type and when Kemps Aerial Surveys stopped flying in 1972, their Ordnance Survey contract was awarded to Flight One, who converted several Twin Pins for this work. Dbr in 1982 when struck by another aircraft in a gale and moved to the museum.

More widely known for its operation of Islander aircraft, in 1968 Loganair obtained this single Beech 18 for charter work. In 1969 it inaugurated the airline's only international service, Glasgow-Aberdeen-Stavanger, but passenger loads were poor and it was discontinued in 1970 after 16 months. Withdrawn in March 1975, the aircraft was gifted to the Royal Scottish Museum a year later. Previous identities were N24R, N555CB and N575C and it was first registered in the UK in 1964 to Survey Flights Ltd in Northern Ireland.

Operational with 19 and 92 Sqdns in Germany from 1962, this Lightning modified to F.2A status early in its career and was withdrawn in 1977. After five years being used for decoy duties at RAF Leuchars, it was saved for exhibition at East Fortune. The two blue diamonds on the tail are a nod to 92 Sqdn's history in pre-Lightning days when they flew Hunters in the famous 'Blue Diamonds' formation team.

Retained by Hawker Siddeley as a developmental test aircraft and also used by Rolls-Royce for evaluation at Filton, this is the oldest actual Harrier existing (ie not counting its predecessors, the P.1127 and Kestrel). By the late 1980s it had a GR.3 nose fitted and was transferred to the Royal Navy as a ground handling trainer, hence the tail marks it still carries.

The Ferranti Flying Unit based at Edinburgh Airport used this night-fighter Meteor, which was ex WM261, between 1960 and 1973 to test radar equipment and to transport company personnel. The paint scheme of white with a red stripe led to the aircraft being nicknamed 'Mentadent' after the brand of toothpaste.

The Bolingbroke was the Canadian-built version of the Bristol Blenheim and was typically used for air gunner training. 9940 was operated by the RCAF between 1942 and 1946 and after disposal was one of several stored in derelict condition on a farm in Winnipeg for many years. Recovered to Strathallan in 1972, it has since undergone a gradual restoration which was only quite recently completed and is now smartly displayed in the yellow overall finish used on all Canadian WW2 training aircraft.

NEAM, as it was known back then, acquired WL181 in 1975 after nearby RAF Acklington closed in 1974. It had languished there since being SoC in 1971, used for lifting practice by the resident rescue Whirlwinds. I'd last seen the aircraft there, a mere 48 years earlier. Its flying career saw service with Tangmere Station Flight, 34 Sqdn, CAW and Advanced Jet Refresher Squadron (Strubby) until going to 5MU in 1965, but it is now exhibited in 92 Sqdn colours.

This F-86D came off the line at Inglewood, CA in 1953 and was assigned to Air Defence Command, initially with the 37th FIS, Burlington, VA and then in late 1954 to the 325th FIS, Hamilton, CA. It was with this unit in 1955 that it flew in the short-lived 'Sabre Knights' aerobatic team, in whose colours it is now displayed. The rest of its career was in Europe, with the 512nd FIS Bentwaters and later Sembach in W Germany. In late 1959 it was prepared by Fiat at Turin under the MAP programme for the Greek AF with whom it operated as 6171, eventually reaching the museum in 1987.

Acquired by the museum from BAe in 1988, WJ639 was built by Handley Page at Radlett as a B.2, flying with 57 Sqdn Coningsby until conversion to TT.18. Used by BAC, the A&AEE and Flight Refuelling for a series of trails before joining 7 Sqdn at St Mawgan, where it finished its service on the squadron's closure at the end of 1981 and was sold back to BAe. Initially displayed in its final camouflage colours with the target towing yellow/black undersides.

XJ823 is the only complete example of the B.2(MRR) maritime reconnaissance variant that has been preserved. Retired to Carlisle Airport in 1983 and now looking splendid after a repaint almost finished, complete with 27 Sqdn badge. My third Vulcan in as many days while on a long weekend in the north.

Veteran of Falklands 'Black Buck' raids 5 & 6, XM597 took the honour of flying the longest combat mission in the history of air warfare, precisely sixteen hours. Running dangerously short of fuel after an air-to-air hook-up mishap following mission 6 on 3rd June 1982, 597 diverted to Rio much to the consternation of the authorities, a Shrike missile stuck on its rail being confiscated. The aircraft was released after a week on condition that it would not be used in further combat; it was retired to the museum at East Fortune in 1984. Still in reasonable shape but in need of some TLC.

Looking smart after a very lengthy repaint that began in 2011, XL319 was flown into retirement at Usworth in January 1983 after just over 21 years of service with 617, 44 and 83 Sqdns at Waddington and Scampton.

Although not a fan of bizjets (despite having been lucky enough to fly on a few this year), this caught my eye as something different.
