Built as Spitfire Ia, L1004 was modified as the prototype of the PR.13. After some period as a test aircraft it did briefly return to an operational squadron. An accident in April 1944 appears to have been the end of its career. Where the photo was taken is not known. The conversion appears to been done by Heston Aircraft at Heston aerodrome (now closed) and part of the test program was conducted at Boscombe Down. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

DR845 was the prototype for Griffin-engined Spitfires. Originally designated Mk. IV, it was changed to Mk.XX (or F20) to avoid confusion with the PR.IV. The pristine condition of the aircraft suggests the photo was taken around the time of its first flight on November 27, 1941. That flight took place at Worthy Down (airfield closed in 1960 but site remained a defence establishment at the time of upload) and that has been used here. However, no location was provided by the IWM. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

No location was given for this photo but may be RAF Catfoss where it was based with the Central Gunnery School. P7973 was donated to Australia in 1945 and has become part of the Australian War Memorial collection. Its link to Australia is that is was flown by Wing Commander Keith "Bluey" Truscott when he was with 452 (Australian) Squadron based at RAF Kirton-in-Lindsey, England. Truscott was a 16-aircraft ace who flew in both the European and Pacific theatres. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
