Quite a home! The FAB still uses the hangar built in Rio by the German Zeppelin company to shelter the transatlantic airships D-LZ127 Graf Zeppelin and D-LZ129 Hindenburg. It was inaugurated on 26 December 1936, just a few months before the Hindenburg disaster at Lakehurst terminated Zeppelin operations. Fortunately this unique building is a listed monument. Carl Gustaf von Rosen, who worked as a KLM DC-2 pilot - see photo 509828 - bought this DC-2, PH-AKH, to help the Finns against the Soviet invaders. He flew it from Sweden to Tampere on 14 January 1940. Bomb racks were fitted and machine guns installed in the nose and in an open dorsal position, as seen here. The aircraft flew one bombing mission on 1 March 1940. Later it served as Marshal Mannerheim's personal transport. In March 1942 it was camouflaged and given a new serial, DO-1. It was retired in 1957 and is now beautifully preserved in the Tuulonen shopping mall. Photo from: Finnish Air Force

Another Koolhoven aircraft in Finnish military service although this is a Desoutter licence-build. It was donated to Finland as an ambulance aircraft by the Danish Red Cross and flown to Malmi by Michael Hansen on 28 October 1941. Hansen had flown the aircraft in the great Melbourne Air Race in 1934. After the war it was briefly OH-TSA. See other photos by clicking on the construction number. Photo from: Finnish Air Force

A handsome plane but like most Koolhoven types the FK.52 reconnaissance aircraft of 1937 was not very successful. Two examples were donated to Finland by the Swedish Count von Rosen in January 1940 and saw some action in the closing stages of the Winter War. Both were still in frontline service when hostilities resumed in June 1941. KO-130 was shot down by Soviet AAA over Hanko on 16 August 1941. KO-129 remained on strength until a crash in February 1943 although by 1942 it was so little used that a bird built a nest in its tail - and was given the time to raise its chicks there. On 1 January 2023 the Brazilian air force began an operation against illegal mining in the land of the Yanomami indigenous people in Roraima state in the far north of Brazil, with A-29 Tucano aircraft to intercept suspicious air traffic. The FAB photographer kindly informed us where he took the photo - at Surucucu, near the Venezuelan border. Photo by: Müller Marin / Força Aérea Brasileira

Zirkus Busch was a well-known circus in Germany and used this plane, Teufel (devil) for promotional purposes. The Raab-Katzenstein KL.1 was a fine aerobatic aircraft which originated as the Dietrich-Gobiet DP.XI. Raab and Katzenstein later redesignated it as the RK.1. At least 40 examples are said to have been built. Photo from: Böblinger Flughafengeschichten

A step between William Stout's Batwing designs and the much better 2-AT. Photo most probably taken at Selfridge Field, where the Air Sedan was tested. Stout was not yet affiliated with Ford then. A sharper photo of the Ju 86 civil prototype. The aircraft was at first named Dresden and renamed Brocken by Lufthansa. Photo from Swedish source but likely taken at Dessau, given the Junkers aircraft in the background and the picture's appearance in a German magazine in June 1936. What are the single-engined planes on the right - W33s? Photo from: Tekniska museet
