Very rare shot of Instone Air Line's newly acquired DC-6 being pushed back into the hangar for refurbishment, just after its ferry flight and still in its Yemen Airways colours with crudely scrubbed titles and logos still clearly visible. Delivered to Maritime Central in 1958, she first arrived in the UK later that year being registered G-APSA with Cunard Eagle. Saudi Arabian bought her in 1964 and donated to Yemen in 1971, where she became 4W-ABQ. Another DC-6 still survived (just) in a very derelict state at Sana'a.

Originally a National Airlines aircraft, this DC-6 was acquired by International Freight Airways as OO-IFA in 3.77 from Air Djibouti. Next briefly registered N779TA and 9J-AEP, she passed into private hands as N84AU before finding her way to South Africa, eventually being broken up at Lanseria in 11.90. Hard to imagine this DC-6 in its glory days with Tasman Empire Airways and Pacific Western Airlines amongst others. Now carrying "Vusumzi - I Am, We Are" titles, Vusumzi apparently means "one who restores and builds the family". It has 'A Step Ahead' and 'Odysseus' titles on the other side under the fire practice scorch marks. The (ex) Westwind in front is (was) N89XL

Returning passengers to Antwerp after a day shopping excursion, this DC-6 suffered a nose-gear collapse when the F/E raised the undercarriage prematurely just after V1 the day before this photo was taken. 105 on board escaped unharmed after the aircraft skidded to a halt at the end of r/w 24. The tail damage was caused by debris thrown up by the propellers impacting the tarmac. Later scrapped at Southend.

A good opportunity to see the unique DC-6 Swing Tail in action. Formerly EC-BBK and seen here receiving attention after delivery from Spain for Zantop, to be Willow Run based. Went to Northern Air Cargo in 1987 and now with Buffalo

Got a highly memorable ride on this from SEN to RTM - the Captain wanted to give the F/O some practice so he made him take off with his windscreen completely obscured by a clipboard. I recall the church at the end of Southend's 5250ft runway 24 looming up ahead and thinking this was starting to look very scary! Originally United's 'Cargoliner Chicago' (N37592) in 1956 and then to Fred Olsen as LN-FOL ten years after. Nose now preserved in Iceland

Heading out on another hurricane hunting mission, the modifications to this 1957-vintage DC-6 are clearly apparent here. Acquired in 1960 from Trans Caribbean, she was sold to Bellomy-Lawson six months after this shot and modified back to normal configuration. Painted in Challenge AT colours in 1979 and re-registered N98BL in 1983. Broken up at MIA in 1993 after a couple of years in storage
