Official photo taken during testing at Martlesham Heath shows E.20A in its final form. The wing and undercarriage was from the modified 1934 aircraft but the fuselage was completely new. The single pair of exhaust stubs suggests that the engine is the 180 hp Regnier 8L installed to allow Guy de Chateaubrun to compete in the Coupe Armand-Esders race held on 20 July 1935 over 1,046 miles from Deauville to Cannes and return. It won at an average speed of 188 mph.

The date is probably June 1934 as it is not yet fully painted. It raced in the King's Cup in July. The Mew Gull in its original form at the Press Launch held at Gravesend, Kent, on 15 March 1934. Powered by a Napier Javelin it was flown in very blustery conditions by Edgar Percival. Designed and stressed by R H Bound, it was modified with a Gipsy Six Srs I, single strut undercarriage and new tapered wing - all designed by Arthur Bage - before competing in the 1934 King's Cup Air Race. A new fuselage was then designed by Bage, and with the new wing and undercarriage from E.20 fitted it became E.20A. The original airframe survived until burnt at Luton in July 1945.

The original E.1 Mew Gull G-ACND, c/n E.20, first flew in March 1934. It soon received a redesigned wing and undercarriage, but after racing in the 1934 King's Cup the E.1 was given up and the new wing and undercarriage were mated to a new, longer fuselage, producing this E.2, c/n E.20A, still G-ACND. The E.2 was destroyed in an accident in France in October 1935. The abandoned fuselage of the E.1 survived at Luton to be burnt in 1945. Thanks to Gordon Riley for the sensible version of the story. 'The King's Cup Air Race starts on Friday next and finishes on Saturday. Last minute preparations were made by pilot[s] on the Percival planes at Luton aerodrome as all planes must be at Hatfield by tomorrow (Thursday). O.P.S. Capt Percival, who is flying the Viscountess Wakefield of Hythe's Percival Mew Gull in the air race, giving the plane a trial spin.' Percival took third place in the race. The E.3, or E.3H, was different from the earlier Mew Gull racers and was called the Super Mew.
