Formerly D-CIAS and originally T.2B-144 for Spain. The real D-ANOY indeed has a history worth remembering. In 1937, it successfully completed a route probing flight to China and back, despite a forced landing after engine failure and the crew being caught in war actions in China. On 2 December 1938, enroute from Berlin to Damascus, it crashed in bad weather close to Wien-Aspern while diverting after a missed approach. The crew was badly hurt, the passengers hardly and all but the aircraft survived.

Do 18 civil prototype, presumably photographed near the factory on Lake Constance. Named Aeolus by Lufthansa, the mailplane was catapulted by a DLH vessel off Horta, Azores and flew to Bermuda on 11 September 1936, continuing to New York the next day. Lost in July 1937 after an emergency landing in the Atlantic due to engine trouble.

Nordmeer on the Heinkel catapult. The photo gives a good view of the inverted gull wing of the Ha 139 and a good idea of its relatively small size. Its heavy Jumo diesel engines penalized performance and only 500 kg of mail could be carried. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Instiution

The prototype of the Ha 139 is launched from Schwabenland, one of several catapult ships operated by Lufthansa for its transatlantic airmail service. These vessels did not refuel seaplanes in mid-ocean, but were stationed in ports in Gambia and Brazil to provide assisted take-offs. In 1937-1938 two ships were based in Horta, Azores, and in Port Washington, New York City, to support a fast trial service across the North Atlantic. Almost the same photograph was made by Rudy Arnold, proving this is off City Island, New York. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

If you have been spotting at FRA, you may have noted the name of the village Zeppelinheim. The airport opened to aircraft and airships in July 1936 but its two huge airship hangars were already demolished in 1940. The Fw 200 Condor, D-ADHR Saarland, dates the photograph in July 1938 at the earliest. The second Ju 52 is D-ALUN Kurt Wintgens and the leftmost aircraft is a Ju 86 which can only be D-AJUU Vogelsberg. Photo from: Fortepan

The L73 was a largish, luxurious biplane airliner equipped for night flying. The eight passengers seats could be converted to four bunk beds. Two L73bs, D-960 and D-961, were delivered to DLH and employed on a Berlin - Königsberg night service from 1927. They were upgraded to L73c standard with different engines in 1928 but D-961 crashed on 28 May 1928. Two more planes, construction numbers 10118 and 10119, were built for DLH in 1930 and sold to Bulgaria in 1931. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

The Merkur was widely used by Deutsche Luft Hansa, which had some 30 examples flying for it at one time. The type was also exported to Brazil, China, Colombia, Japan, and Switzerland. Another interesting puzzle. The Ju 52 production list quickly revealed the aircraft name, but also that Lufthansa had four Iron Annies named Olaf Bielenstein between 1935 and 1945. The source says this is a 'German naval station', implying a wartime shot. However, a look under the wing rules out D-AVAJ, D-AIAG and D-ASHB, so this must be D-APOR, which served on the DLH route to Oslo in 1936. To Syndicato Condor as PP-CBF in 1938. To Argentine air force in 1946 as T-155. To Argentine ministry of Agriculture in 1951 as LV-ZBH and even returned to service as late as 1956. Photo from: National Museum of Denmark

Carrying mail and one passenger from Hamburg on 14 March 1929, the crew could not find Cologne in fog and came down in a muddy field across the Dutch border, near Schaesberg, now part of Landgraaf. The worst damage was a broken propeller and the aircraft could be flown out two days later from a straw-covered strip. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The last month of peace. Photo almost certainly taken on 2 August 1939 when Lufthansa introduced the Ju 90 on the Berlin - Amsterdam - London route, and some Dutch journalists were given a ride from Schiphol to Croydon and back. On 10 August Mecklenburg violated British airspace restrictions and overflew RAF Manston. By the end of the month regular Lufthansa flights to London had ceased. This photo was probably taken on 2 August 1939, the day the Ju 90 entered service on the Berlin - Amsterdam - London route. By the end of the month regular Lufthansa flights to London had ceased. If the big Ju 90 continued on the Amsterdam service at all, the photo cannot have been taken much later as the departing Fokker C.X does not wear the wartime orange triangle insignia. The following winter D-ASND was commandeered as BG-GX. Later coded J4-HH, it was destroyed in 1943. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)
