The prototype Triplane first flew in May 1916 and the type entered service with the Royal Naval Air Service early in 1917 and a total of 147 were built. It was a very agile but lightly armed type that was soon superceded by the biplanes. Often quoted as cn 8385M, but that is its allocated RAF maintenance serial.

The Vickers company began thinking about air-to-air fighting in 1912, and came up with pusher aircraft to avoid firing at one's own propeller. It went wrong in building two-seaters with a flexible gun, however, and the Gunbus, which first flew in July 1914 and first fought a German aircraft on Christmas Day, 1914, was too slow to be an effective fighter. This replica was once airworthy as G-ATVP.

XA847 was the first of three P.1Bs which followed two P.1As and was much closer in shape to the production Lightning design. Maiden flight 4.4.57 at Warton piloted by Roly Beamont; on 25.11.57 became the UK's first aircraft to exceed Mach 2. After a long career at Boscombe Down and Farnborough trialling various Lightning upgrades, retired to Henlow in 6.69 after 468 flights/205 hrs and placed on display at the RAF Museum in 1972 but ousted by a Lightning F.6 in 1988. Narrowly avoiding scrapping, passed into private hands and remains dismantled in Suffolk

When sadly and controversially this Beverley was scrapped at the RAF Museum in 1990 due to corrosion, it left only one of this memorable type (XB259) surviving in the world. XH124 first took to the air in Apr 1957 and served with 30 Sqn, 84 Sqn and 242 OCU, before arriving at Hendon for display in June 1968.

The only surviving example of 1064 Defiants built, flying with 307 (Polish) Sqn in WWII coded 'EW-D' (now appears on the aircraft at Hendon) and later with 153 and 285 Sqn. The Merlin-powered Defiant was initially successful but once German pilots became aware of the rear and upward firepower, it was severely hampered by the extra weight of the turret. Put aside for preservation as long ago as 1944, first displayed at St Athan in 1960 and moved to the RAF Museum in 1971, back in night-fighter black finish

One of the most unusual exhibits at the RAF Museum, this Belvedere spent most of its short service life between 1962 and 1969 with 66 Sqdn in the Far East. Of the 26 built, three survive; the other two are at the Helicopter Museum at Weston-Super-Mare and the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester

It was very dark in this part of the museum - long exposure needed. The G-series Me-110 were night fighters; this one has FuG220b Liechtenstein SN-2 radar and was given Air Min serial AM34. Flown to Farnborough 1.8.45 and housed over the years at many locations in the UK before arriving at Hendon in 1980
