Delivered to the USAAF 28 March 1945 as 44-76629, to the RAF as KN483 3 April 1945, and 28 Sqd SAAF as 6881 6 October 1945. To Africair/Wenela Air Service 7 November 1953 first as ZS-DIV, then VP-YSN and A2-ZEN. Returned to the SAAF ca 1980 as the second 6855. Hit by surface to air missile in then South West Africa 1 May 1986, damaged and repaired. Partially converted to C-47TP December 1997, to Dodson Aviation as N914Q 14 July 1998, to Dodson International as ZS-OJJ 15 November 1999, later Rossair, Naturelink, Limpopo Air Service, UN Humanitarian Air Service. When the USA refused export license for further C-130s for South Africa, they turned to France and bought nine Transall C-160Z which arrived between July 1969 and December 1970. They served with 28 Sqd at AFB Waterkloof alongside the Hercules until the fleet was retired at the end of 1992. Photographer unknown

The South African Air Force purchased 12 used Caravans. 3012 was the last delivered on 4 January 1990 entering service with 41 Sqd as ZS-MLR. The Caravan fleet was given military serials after the 1994 elections but retained their civilian colour schemes. With the unification of all armed forces into the South African National Defence Force, the Caravans were given a more unified military look with national insignia and squadron markings. Latterly used by Denel as a testbed for the SMR-95B, a development of the Klimov RD-33 utilised in the Mig 29. The project ended because of budget cuts and problems with the aircraft's centre of gravity and the aircraft was stored until joining the SAAF museum.
