Latterly used by Denel as a testbed for the SMR-95B, a development of the Klimov RD-33 utilised in the Mig 29. There was never a problem with the centre of gravity of the aircraft, as has been claimed. It completed all its flight tests faultlessly. The project was cancelled due to political reasons and it was stored until joining the SAAF museum.
