During the late 1950s, the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland started the construction of the Kariba Dam to build power stations to support the infrastructure of what today is Zambia and Zimbabwe. The dam was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother on 17 May 1960. The flag on the car is her personal standard. First flown at Hurn 14 October 1958, delivered to SAA as ZS-CDU 28 October. Ca 1962 repainted in the first orange tail livery first introduced with the 707s in 1960. September 1971 retired and stored at JNB. To British Midland January 1972 as G-AZLR, leased to Cyprus Airways 1975. Retired June 1982 at EMA where it became a fire trainer, scrapped by 1997. VP-WGC was the first Viscount to join Air Zimbabwe after independence. It was delivered to Salisbury, now Harare, in May 1981 still in the livery of the previous operator Dan-Air. Before that it had served with British Midland and Ghana Airways.

In April 1973 three Boeing 720s made their way to Rhodesia, circumventing the UN sanctions against the country. VP-YNM was one of these aircraft seen here at Salisbury a few months after arriving with sisterships YNL and YNN after Air Rhodesia clandestinely acquired three of Calair's five 720s. It started its service life with Eastern Air Lines in August 1961. In December 1970 it joined the fleet of short-lived German charter airline Calair.

With the establishment of the Air Force of Zimbabwe, some of the facilities of the former Rhodesian Air Force were renamed. New Sarum AFB was renamed Manyame AFB and this 3 Squadron Aviocar is here seen at Manyame which shares runways with Harare's civilian airport. Photographer unknown

Delivered new to Lufthansa as D-ABUD 24 Nov 1965. To Air Zimbabwe as VP-WKV 23 June 1982 and reregistered Z-WKV 31 October 1983. To Seagreen Air Transport 1 October 1991. Parked at Ostend 1 June 1992 for sale. To African International as 5Y-AXI 31 March 1993. Withdrawn from use at Nairobi December 1999 and subsequently broken up. Photographer unknown
