On display in the Research and Development Gallery at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) produced a Pulsed Detonation Engine (PDE) in the 2000s using off-the-shelf automotive components. Shockwaves from controlled detonations of the fuel-air mixture provided a peak thrust of about 200 lb at around 125 decibels through four tubes at the back. After AFRL's five-year joint effort with Innovative Scientific Solutions Inc. (ISSI), Pete Siebold flew the first manned PDE flight in this modified Rutan Long-EZ "Borealis" on 31 Jan 08 at Mojave.

On display in the Research & Development Gallery at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. This was the world's first VSTOL tilt-rotor aircraft, powered by a single P&W R-985 Wasp. It was the result of a joint initiative in 1951 between the US Army and USAF. Two were built, and the first hover tests began in 1955. Take off to horizontal flight and back was achieved on 18 Dec 58. It never went into production, but paved the way later for the CV-22 Osprey. The first XV-3 was written off, and this is the only surviving example.

This restored Spad is the latest to be displayed at NMUSAF. An ex-USN Skyraider, BuNo. 134600 flew in combat with VNAF's 514th and 520th FS. "The Proud American" was flown by Lt Col W. Jones on his MoH mission in 1968. It was flown on 1/2nd June 1972 by Capt R. Smith, awarded the AFC for the farthest rescue of Oyster 01 Bravo, WSO Capt. R. Locher who ejected from his F-4D over N. Vietnam. It was the last USAF A-1 to be lost in combat in SE Asia in Sept. 1972. Call sign "Sandy" A-1s are remembered for SAR missions.

The Bell X-5 did research that led to more modern swing wing aircraft like the F-14 and F-111. Inspired by the WWII Messerschmitt P.1011 design, the German fighter's wing sweep was only adjustable on the ground and the Bell design was adjustable in flight. This last remaining X-5 was the first of two built and is displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Pictured in an annex hangar, it has since moved to the Museum's new display hangar suspended in the Research & Development section.

In 1943 a Romanian AF pilot defected to Cyprus with this a/c. It was subsequently flown to the U.S. for flight testing at Wright Field in Ohio. It was then put into storage and delivered to the USAF Museum in January 1960. The markings in the slide were the first ones applied by the museum. The a/c is currently on display in the World War 2 Gallery in Romanian AF markings. This slide was taken in the outdoor aircraft display area at the original museum on Patterson AFB.

Donated to the USAF Museum by Spain in 1966. After acquiring an actual Bf 109 the museum deaccessioned this a/c. In 2003 it was registered with the FAA as N109FF. It has since been restored to flying condition as a Bf 109G-2 and is at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, VA. This slide was taken at the outdoor aircraft display area at the original USAF Museum site on Patterson AFB.

Probably one of the prototypes for the US Army which had ordered 5000 of the two-seat fighters. Order cancelled after two prototypes. However there was a production run of about 50 for the US Navy. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

This is the first of two X-5 a/c built. It first flew on 20 June 1951 and had last test flight on 25 October 1955. It was then used as a chase aircraft until 1958, when it was transferred to the museum. This slide was taken in the outdoor aircraft display area at the original museum on Patterson AFB. It is now on display in the Research and Development Gallery in the current museum.

Surefire way for a Jenny to be photographed was to have a prang. In this instance both left wings have been torn off but the aircraft otherwise looks undamaged. Photo taken at what was then Wright Field but now part of the Patterson (eastern) section of Wright-Patterson Air Base. The US Army received hundreds of Canadian-built Jennies such as this one.
