Would you fancy a flight to Hawaii - in this? Pilot Parkhurst and navigator Lowes were happy to be disqualified from the Dole Air Race due to insufficient fuel capacity, as their flight from Illinois had not gone well. The National Airways System company from Lomax, Illinois, built and sponsored this biplane which looks stubbier than either the Air King 1926 model, with two pairs of seats side by side in two cockpits, or the three-seat 1928 model. The lower wing had a longer span than the upper wing. The name City of Peoria was not worn. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

The very first Lockheed (rather than Loughead) aircraft, the Vega prototype, was bought by newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst and took off in the Dole Air Race to Hawaii one month after its first flight. It was clearly the most advanced plane in the race but vanished in the Pacific with pilot John Frost and navigator Gordon Scott. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

This little bird, apparently the favourite for some people to win the Dole Air Race from California to Hawaii, was designed and built by reserve naval officer Norman Goddard here at North Island. He crashed El Encanto in the take-off run from Oakland. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

After rejecting the three-seat Fokker C.VIII strategic reconnaissance aircraft, the Dutch army air force ordered the two-seat C.IX, a modified C.V. As can be seen here a ventral machine gun could be fitted. The photo date is not known but this is clearly an official portrait of the first machine, 661, taken by the able service photographer at Soesterberg. Only five aircraft were purchased, and employed as target tugs. One more C.IX was delivered to Switzerland. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

The Breese Model 5 was designed for the Dole Air Race. This machine was flown solo by Maj Livingston Irving, who served with the 103rd Aero Squadron in France in 1918 - note the unit's Indian head insignia. Irving crashed the heavy-loaded aircraft on his second take-off attempt. The registration was not worn on race day. Sister aircraft NX914 Aloha was one of only two contenders to reach Hawaii. Designed by Charles Seibel, Cessna's only helicopter looks like it was intended for flying to church on Sunday, but the CH-1 actually broke a world altitude record and the US Army tested it as the YH-41 Seneca. Apparently it had serious technical issues as Cessna tried to buy back the circa 50 examples built and to have the type certificate revoked. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society

The Helicopter Engineering Research Corporation (HERC) of Pennsylvania was formed by former Piasecki engineers Drago Jovanovich and Frank Kozloski to build the JOV-3 two-seater. It was the predecessor of the McCulloch MC-4, later turned into the Jovair 4. Early helicopter advertising photographs are fascinating stuff. This one is rather odd, as it looks like the pilot is being flagged down to be breathalyzed! Photo from: Vertical Flight Society

The YUH-61 was Boeing Vertol's unsuccessful competitor to Sikorsky's Black Hawk. The need to fit in a C-130 was even more appararent in this design. The photo shows the type's first flight, which does not seem to have taken place at the Ridley Park factory. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society
