Clearly withdrawn from use, but I have been unable to find any details of the reason - a hard landing, maybe? It was scrapped by Henry Orchard, St Austell in May 1992.

Based on the Tupolev Tu-4 airframe, in 1967 China developed an AWACS platform to try and enable them to monitor US Atomic tests in the Pacific. Powered by four Ivchenko AI-20K turboprop engines, the project was named KJ-1 and had a Type 843 rotordome pylon mounted above the fuselage. Trials were unsuccessful as the equipment was too heavy and failed to meet PLAAF requirements, the project was cancelled in 1971.

Three C-46s in any one place is pretty special but when they are Chinese Air Force that makes it even more so. These were one of the first displays to be seen when entering the museum in 1991, sadly, none at the time had visible serials. One, since identified as 36044 has moved on to the China Civil Aviiation Museum while the other two, both of which remain unidentified remain at Datangshan.
