The first B-52 to fly, Featuring tandem seating as did the XB-52, all future models had a side by side flight deck. Seen here in May 1959 at the old Air Force Museum located on the Patterson side of Wright-Patterson AFB. The YB-52 was retired in the late 1950s to the museum, but the aircraft was scrapped in the mid-1960s because of a drive to get rid of excess military hardware.

This was in fact the original aircraft as depicted in the picture. It was however sold to a private operator in Alaska Dec 55 as N4752C. It later received a major avionics upgrade. In Apr 70 it went to Northern Air Cargo. There were further avionics and structural upgrades in the 70s. It crashed short of the runway at Nelson Lagoon AK 4 Nov 82 and was substantially damaged. Repaired and operated until 1 Jan 85. Ferried to the museum at Wright Field 30 Jun 88 as N4752C.

Pictured outside the main USAF museum building, Columbine III was US President Dwight D. Eisenhower's personal aircraft from 1954 until leaving office in 1961. Ordered by the US Navy as bu 131650, it left the factory as the sole USAF VC-131E. Continuing non-presidential VIP transport duties after replacement by a new VC-137, the aircraft was retired in 1966 and ferried to Wright-Patterson AFB for the United States Air Force Museum.
