Thunder City Lightning ZU-BEX carries the lion of the Lightning Training Flight. Sadly, this aircraft suffered a hydraulic failure during a display at AFB Overberg 14 November 2009 and crashed with the loss of the pilot and aircraft. Picture taken in front of the Thunder City hangar at Capetown .

First flown at Hurn 14 October 1958, delivered to SAA as ZS-CDU 28 October. Ca 1962 repainted in the first orange tail livery first introduced with the 707s in 1960. September 1971 retired and stored at JNB. To British Midland January 1972 as G-AZLR, leased to Cyprus Airways 1975. Retired June 1982 at EMA where it became a fire trainer, scrapped by 1997. Delivered to the USAAF as 41-107469 in 1944. To Chicago & Southern Airlines as NC53103 in 1946, Philippine Air Lines as PI-C102 in 1948 and Pacific Overseas Airlines as HS-POE in 1951. To Thai Airways as HS-TSA in 1958 then to the Thai Air Force in 1960. Returned to Thai Airways in 1965 then to Botswana National Airways as VQ-ZEF in 1966. Reregistered as A2-ZEF in 1968. To Suidwes Lugdiens as ZS-IPR in 1972. To the SAAF as 6906 in 1981. Back to ZS-IPR in 1995 then to the Dutch Dakota Association as PH-DDY in 1997. Preserved at Lelystad from 2004 as NL-316 and PH-TAR from 2020. Photographer unknown

Delivered to British Airways as G-BGDD February 1980, leased to Transavia as PH-TSE May - September 1995, to Comair September 1995, to Bhoja Air as AP-BKD February 2012. Photographer unknown

First flown at Boeing's Renton facility 3 September 1981, delivered to South African 18 September and remaining with SAA until 2005. It was leased to Air Comores as D6-CAJ between November 1984 and October 1985, and also spent a period with Safair. To TANS Peru as OB-1806-P in June 2005, to Aero Gal as HC-CFR June 2006, to Rutaca Airlines in 2011 and used for spares. Seen here at Cape Town with the then new flag on the tail and with titles in Afrikaans on the port side, English on the starboard. Duiring its tenure with Comair, it carried both Comair and British Airways titles. Withdrawn from use in July 2004 and parted out at Johannesburg. Photographer unknown
