This floating hangar was originally built in the late 1920s on Seattle oceanfront at Pier 3 on Elliot Bay. Local aviation pioneer Vern Gorst towed it from the ocean through the locks to establish a seaplane base at the south end of Lake Union at Valley St. and Fairview Ave. Aviation pioneer Lana Kurtzer bought the hangar in the mid-1930s and moved it west to a new shore facility at 950 Westlake Ave. N. in 1947. Lake Union Air bought the seaplane base after Kurtzer died in 1988. but fire destroyed the hangar in 1991. Then Kenmore Air bought the historic Kurtzer property in 1993.

Delivered to the US Army in March 1954, 53-2819 was assigned to the Texas National Guard around 1967. Registered N5317G circa 1975, the aircraft was with Willow Air Service when it crashed just west of the summit of Merrill Pass, AK on Sep 26, 1985 in poor weather. The wreck was registered to Lake Union Air Service in February 1989 as it was rebuilt. Re-registered N21LU, the floatplane written of when the wing struck a moored tug boat as it abandoned a take off on June 2, 1991. Rebuilt again, it flew with Northwest Seaplanes as N67683 until moving to Alaska as N726P in 1999.

As a U-1A, 55-3296, it served with US Army aviation in Alaska until 1973, then as N90422 'Miss Piggy' for the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory (NARL) from 1975 until 1987. With 4346 hours on the clock, the Otter was converted to turbine in 1993, and celebrated its 25th anniversary with Kenmore in the summer of 2018.
