Carvair no 17 was first flown in April 1969 as LX-IOF and was sold as F-BVEF in January 1976. Broken up at Naples, FL around 1993 as N55243

Delivered to USAAF as 43-17142 19th July 1944. SOC and registered N30042 26th February 1946 for United Airlines and subsequently acquired in February 1962 by Interocean Airways as LX-IOF. Sold to Aviation Traders and delivered to them at Stansted 6th February 1964 for conversion to ATL-98 Carvair (No.17). After storage and conversion at Stansted, it was registered to British Air Ferries as G-AXAI 19th Feb.1969. It made its first flight as G-AXAI at Stansted 2nd April 1969 and was delivered to BAF at Southend later that day. Cancelled 27th Jan.1976 on sale to France as F-BVEF.

The only member of the Douglas piston transports I flew on was a Carvair from Rotterdam to Southend , in the late fifties the car ferry operations made Southend one of the busiest fields in England. A Freddie Laker concept!

Ex C-54B 43-17142. Converted by Douglas to DC-4 standard in December 1945 for sale to United Airlines who operated it as a freighter until December 1956. Sold to Transocean and leased to Lufthansa during 1958/59 in full colours but retaining N30042. Later converted to ATL-98 Carvair.
