Last active as BB-131 with the Luftwaffe in January 1960, this Sabre was first taken on charge by the RCAF in March 1954. It went to Germany in September 1957 and was preserved at various locations until arriving in Bochum in late 1988. Of the different colour schemes it got here, the pink one was probably the ugliest, and this one the dullest - but at least it survived.

DART 1 Sabre Mk6 with Flight Systems taxis to runway 03L at Luke

Former Royal Canadian Air Force CL-13 Sabre Mk5 with serial 23283 continued carrying its Canadian serial after conversion to QF-86E and when assigned to the US Army from 1980. It is here seen at Mojave (CA). The Sabre was also civil registered between 1978 and 1984 as N2290Z with Flight Systems at Mojave (CA).

Eleven days after this photo was taken 19187, then based in the UK, was lost without trace over the North Sea. The pilot, on a homing exercise, reported he had run out of fuel and ejected. An extensive search of the location the pilot gave failed to find him or the wreckage. It was surmised he may have been on a reciprocal heading and had flown away from the beacon instead of towards. I see with no little regret that this preserved Sabre 5 carried much more interesting paint schemes in the past.

This is actually 23641. First flight 5 Jan 1956. Delivered to No. 1 Air Division. With 439 (F) Squadron. To No. 1 (F) OTU RCAF Station Chatham 2 Mar 1961. To Golden Hawks RCAF Station Trenton 14 Mar 1963. Active Reserve No. 6 Repair Depot Detachment Mountain View 11 Mar 1964. Strike off 20 Dec 1966. To Crown Assets Disposal Corp. Sold to City of Belleville ON. Preserved, displayed in Golden Hawks colours. Displayed in West Zwick's Island Park which is on the waterfront in Belleville, Ontario just west of the Belleville Bay Bridge. Belleville is 14 km east of Canadian Forces Base Trenton, a major RCAF base.
