In reasonably intact condition, less engines, the future for ex-US Navy BuN 148346 looked bleak in 2006. But I suspect that it still might be extant in 2018. Registration looks like N22165 instead of N2216S

Joining the Dutch navy as a young P2V-7 in 1953, this Neptune saw the world - it was first based at Biak, Dutch New Guinea, and later at Hato, Antilles as well as at Valkenburg in Holland. With the decommission of EHVB in 2006, its gate guard was moved to EHKD, the navy's sole remaining airfield.

Seen long before restoration for the Pima Air & Space Museum, this is the only surviving example of four modified Neptunes operated by VAH-21 on night interdiction work over the Mekong Delta. An extensive electronic sensor suite replaced the ASW gear, including LLTV, SLAR and equipment to detect vehicle ignition systems. Armed with twin 20 mm cannon in tail plus two minigun pods and four bombs underwing.

The JMSDF operated a total of 64 P2V-7 (SP-2H) patrol aircraft from 1956 to 1981. The first 16 were transferred from the USN, the remainder either assembled or manufactured by Kawasaki in Japan. The final delivery was in 1965, three years after Lockheed had finished production. This example was one of those delivered in knocked-down component form

Among many numbers on the nose is the MASDC (now AMARC) code 1P334. Hawkins and Powers acquired the P-2 from there in July 1987 and it was registered with D&G as N173AM at the photo date, a registration linking to its BuNo 143173. The remains of '206' on the nose may be from the end of the sixties and ten years before that 143173 happened to be coded '7' with VP-21, a number now sprayed on the nose wheel door. Kept in position by a makeshift tail support and counterweights, being a bunch of selected aircraft parts. A little more fading of the paint that was used to mask the military markings will make this Neptune look again like she did when flying with VP-67. Well, almost.

Remnants of its military ID apart from the obvious BuNo are the MASDC code on the nose wheel door and the faded combination 'LV-3' worn with VP-66 in the first half of the seventies. Bleeding through the faded paint is code '7W' worn at NAS Willow Grove in 1970. Info from Baldur's P-2 pages used with permission - thank you. [F90X, Provia]

Tanker 139 together with N140HP/140 (cn 7102). These beauties could not have looked better when H&P started operating them in 1990 after overhaul and modifications. Since their contract had been cancelled in May 2004 they were waiting for another smoky start-up. For that, their remaining service life had to be established, a tough and costly operation. Nevertheless, it was successfully completed for this airframe that flew on as Tanker 43, N443NA. [Velvia 50, DiMage Scan]

Two immaculate Neptunes in eye-catching colors at the Greybull museum. Tanker 139 retained the long tail cone that used to house the MAD (Magnetic Anomaly Detection) sensors while Tanker 140 received a short version. There aren't too many of these compact cones and they all seem different in shape. [Nikon F100]

The museum acquired this aircraft in 1983, and for some years it was their flying Neptune N45309. It was last seen flying as such in the late 1980s. The Neptune was withdrawn from the warbird circuit and became a static display item at the museum, as seen here.
