The majority of the 214 C-160 Transall's built went to the armed forces of Germany, France, Turkey and South Africa. Only about 12 Transall's were civilian registered over the years, of which 9 were delivered to Pelita Air Service in Indonesia between 1981 and 1985. Four of those ended up with Manunggal Air, PK-VTR being one of them (ex PK-PTO). It still wears the basic Pelita livery in this 2008 picture. Manunggal Air went out of business in 2015.

These aircraft - reportedly some 24 - received an external modification on the side of the fuselage just in front of the wings. When the USA refused export license for further C-130s for South Africa, they turned to France and bought nine Transall C-160Z which arrived between July 1969 and December 1970. They served with 28 Sqd at AFB Waterkloof alongside the Hercules until the fleet was retired at the end of 1992. During the Border War era, the SAAF operated their Transalls with very discrete markings. Only the last digit of the registration is painted on aircraft and above the cockpit windows. Destroyed on 23 Nov. 1984 in an accident following a mid-air collision near Castres, France with another Transall (F-156/61-ZV). Both were out of Toulouse-Francazal Air Base on a double training exercise along with two other C-160's. A drop of paratroopers was followed by a very low altitude navigation flight. At the end of the exercise the two aircraft collided and crashed, killing all 13 aboard both planes. In Memoriam...
