Not a genuine RNZAF aircraft but a composite from Indonesia (swap for a Vampire). Understand it was a Cavalier Mustang.

Built too late to see combat in WWII, this Mustang served with 45th TRS at Kimpo during the Korean War. Authorised for disposal in April 1956 at McClellan AFB, it went to Canada and returned to USA, where it changed hands several times. It was restored at Chino, CA as a TF-51D and flown with drop tanks to Duxford, where it reached on July 4, 2007 and became a part of The Fighter Collection. It is painted to represent Capt Frank Birtciel's P-51D 44-14561, Miss Velma of the 55th FG based at Wormingford.

This aircraft is really the former RAAF A68-170, built in 1949. Never actually off RAAF charge, it has been with the RAAF Museum since 1970 and was restored to flying condition during 1989-99.

This P-51D was built at Inglewood in December 1944 as 44-63871 and transported by sea to the UK in February 1945. It was TOC by the USAAF 8th Air Force but did not go into action, rather was ferried to Sweden in April where it entered service as J26, with Upplands Flygflottilj F16 based in Uppsala, serving there until 1952. It then went to Israel and took part in the Suez campaign. Once removed from the Israeli reserve its history is unknown but surfaced sometime later in Cannes with the civil registration N9722F. It was purchased by the museum in July 1968 and is on display in these fake markings.

A significant piece of Chinese military history, this Mustang is one of nine that flew over Beijing on October 1st of 1949 for the Founding of the People's Republic of China parade. Displayed outdoors as seen here and exposed to the elements for many years until the museum was upgraded and it was finally moved indoors.

A remarkable story, this aircraft was one of six Mustangs at Emu Field subjected to an atomic bomb test in 1953. Fourteen years later after an epic repairs it was flown from Emu to Coober Pedy by Tony Schwerdt without approval and later to Parafield with approval, however registration from the CAA was not forthcoming until four days after A68-1 had been sold to the U.S. Damaged in transit to the USA it was again abandoned for another ten years before being restored to flying condition.

Cliff Cummins' Mustang after it ran off the east end of the runway at Reno-Stead. It suffered an engine failure during that year's Air Race and attempted an emergency landing. Its larger propeller (a racing modification) struck the ground and caused the aircraft to run off the runway. The Mustang was rebuilt at Long Beach, CA in 1971.
