A venture onto the terminal roof service area gave this view of the famous Alliance SP which served SAA's Uganda/Tanzania/Rwanda joint op 1995-99, just in from LHR. After return to SAA, this 1976 machine was scrapped at JNB in 10.02. Behind, an Inversija IL-76 is being pushed back using its special tow-bar, with Lake Victoria visible beyond. On final over the lake, we had a major bird-strike which took out engine no.3, so I had to wait all day for another SP to ferry up from JNB before going on to DAR

Just over a year old at this time and probably staging on to the USA with Saddam Hussein for further talks about the Iran-Iraq war, the presidential SP was positioned to Tozeur in Tunisia prior to the first Gulf War in 1990 for safe keeping. It remains there to this day, all white and maintained by Iraqi mechanics every six months. By 11.10 was up for sale by Iraqi Airways

The 747SP was the first wide-body for state owned CAAC. This is the second one (of six) , delivered June 26, 1980. By the time of the photo, the overseas airline division of CAAC had become Air China, but this aircraft had yet to get the new titles and tail logo. Re-registered B-2438 in 1992, it was sold to UT Finance December 1999 and parked at Victorville, CA. The airplane was ferried to Plattsburgh, NY on June 07, 2001 where is was gradually scrapped.
