From the DFW C.V, the DFW company from Leipzig developed its F.37 which may have been designated C.VII by the German army. Fitted with a BMW IV engine, the type broke the world altitude record in 1919 although the FAI would not recognize this. One F.37 was converted to the P.1 Luft-Limousin with a Mercedes engine and a richly upholstered three-passenger cabin. The photo was probably taken at the ELTA exhibition in Amsterdam. For some time TWA was 'Trans World Airline' rather than 'Airlines' and the TWA logo had an arrow through it. This C-54E, ex 44-9053, was in the TWA fleet between 1946 and 1951. The KLM DC-4 behind can be identified as PH-TAS Schiedam. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

Mishap for an MB.221 - an MB.220 re-engined with R-1820 Cyclone engines and re-introduced by Air France after the war. F-AOHC was originally delivered in 1937 and named Guyenne. Apparently the original type was a popular airliner but the MB.221s met with spates of incidents - three more for this airframe in the first three months of 1947! Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

Skymasters acquired by KLM in 1945 received semi-military markings with orange triangle insignia as civil operation was still difficult on the route to the Far East. They were already inscribed in the civil register. NL-309, ex 42-107445, was PH-TAK but the civil mark was probably never applied as the aircraft was sold as G-AJPL in June 1947. The Difoga 421 was designed by former Koolhoven engineers and built at Difoga (Diepen's Ford Garage) in Bergen op Zoom during the German occupation of the Netherlands. It was conceptually similar to the De Schelde S.20 and the later Fokker F.25 Promotor. Powered by a 95-hp Ford car engine it first flew on 16 May 1946, but never flew again after an emergency landing on 28 August 1946. The PH-NAG registration was requested, but the type never received its CofA and the registration was not officially issued. Photo by: Joep Friezer / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)
