On April 19, 1954, NZ5901 crashed landed at Mauripur, Pakistan. The accident left the aircraft badly damaged, its back broken, undercarriage collapsed and engines hanging from the wings. Parts of the aircraft were shipped to Bristol in the UK for rebuilding. Sources say only the tail and engines reused and the rest of the airframe scrapped. The armed guard was not for show as a clash between the Mau movement and New Zealand police in December 1929 had led to 10 deaths. 995 was destroyed on a separate voyage in 1930 aboard the Dunedin when it dropped while being hoisted.
