Replaced by Ikeja in 1942, Apapa airport in Lagos is almost forgotten. This photo was certainly taken there, presumably in early 1938, when a similar shot of Dione was published with the following caption: 'The Air Mail at Apapa, Lagos. A weekly air mail and passenger service is now in regular operation between Lagos and London. The service is by Kano and Khartoum.' G-ADFF is to DH.86B standard with auxiliary tailfins, which were fitted in April-May 1937. Damaged here at Lagos on 21 March 1939. Transferred to BOAC and to Egypt in 1940. Impressed as AX760 in 1941. Damaged at Lydda in November 1941 and written off in 1942. Photo by: Edward Duckworth / Northwestern University Libraries, Illinois

Delia was sent to Africa in late March 1936. In October 1937 it started a route between Lagos and Accra on the Gold Coast, operated by Elders Colonial Airways from Freetown. Photo believed taken at Lagos - Apapa. Delia was transferred to the Far East in June 1938. Returned to Africa by BOAC, Delia crashed at Minna, Nigeria on 17 June 1941. This Express was flown out to Khartoum in early 1936 to survey a new air route from Sudan to Nigeria. The source says the photo was taken at Apapa in Lagos and we think this is correct, though flights initially terminated at Kano pending improvement of Apapa. Daedalus was transferred to the Far East in late 1937. It catched fire and burnt at Bangkok in December 1938. Photo by: Edward Duckworth / Northwestern University Libraries, Illinois

One of three six-passenger Sea Eagle flying boats. Supermarine subsidiary British Marine Air Navigation Co started a Southampton to Guernsey service with these on 25 September 1923. Imperial Airways took over in May 1924, using the new Marine Airport facility in Woolston, near the Supermarine factory. The roof probably says 'Continent 1 hour, Channel Islands 1½ h' but the planned service to France did not materialise. Reg is not G-EBCS. Airframe rammed by a ship in the harbour of St Peter Port, Guernsey in January 1927 and wrecked.

Registered April 1925, to Imperial Airways 15 Sept.1926. Nicknamed 'The Flying Pig' due to its ungainly appearance. After an engine change the previous day, it suffered engine problems shortly after taking off from Croydon on a test flight 13 July 1928, crashed near Purley and burst into flames. The pilot and one passenger survived but the other four passengers died in the accident, which stopped the practice of staff being taken up as passengers on test flights. At the time of the crash, this was the last Vickers Vulcan flying. In the background is Argosy I G-EBLO of Imperial Airways.

Registered 25th Nov.1925. Sold to Sir Alan Cobham and registered to his National Aviation Displays Ltd on 27th Nov.1933. Converted to an in-flight tanker in 1934 and flew out to Hal Far, Malta later that year to refuel Sir Alan's Airspeed Courier G-ABXN on its attempted non-stop flight to India. There are conflicting reports as to whether it did carry out the proposed refuelling over the Mediterranean or not but the Courier suffered a throttle problem, which necessitated Cobham forced-landing on Malta. That flight was abandoned and W.10 G-EBMR was sold locally for scrap. Cancelled Nov.1934.
