On display just inside the main gate, this A-4A had been recently repainted not long before I took this slide. In 1978 VA-303 was operating the A-7B Corsair II with these markings less the "Alameda" on the vertical fin. VA-303 had one of the more colorful paint schemes to be seen, but in just a year or two the era of "Haze Gray" was about to eliminate all the color in Naval Aviation.

This was the second Skyhawk built, and was originally a YA4D-1. After testing was complete, it was reconfigured into an operational A4D-1 (later A-4A). It is (and still is as of 2022) in the markings it wore when assigned to VA-83.

After being retired from Naval Air Reserve Training Unit Jacksonville, this A-4A was in storage awaiting transfer to the George T. Baker Aviation School in Miami. It is still there and currently on display. At one time it was registered with the FAA as N5548. The dual Navy/Marine markings were once used in the Naval Air Reserve as both the Navy Reserve and the Marine reserve units at a base shared the same aircraft. The NARTU was responsible for the maintenance and assignment of the available aircraft.
