The Sunderlands design was so good that it is one of the very few pre-WWII types to remain in service with the RAF long after the end of that conflict. The type also participated in the Berlin Airlift and the Korean War with the last examples being scrapped at Seletar in 1959. After her RAF service this particular aircraft served for four years with the Aeronavale (51-56) before being donated to the Short Sunderland Trust for preservation.

This Lightning was delivered in 1963 to the Air Fighting Development Squadron (AFDS) at RAF Birnbrook. Some 3 yrs later, after having flown only 277 hours, she was returned to Warton for upgrade to F.2A standard, after which she was delivered to 19 Squadron at RAF Guttersloh. After the Lightnings in West Germany were replaced by F-4s, XN726 was trucked to Shoreburyness for use as a target in armament testing. Fortunately the nose was saved prior to the remains of the airframe being scrapped.

This T1 was delivered to the RAF in September 1973 but w/o over a year later when it crashed on take-off from Little Rissington after a double engine failure. The fuselage was transported to RAF Finningley for ground instruction and is undergoing refurbishment at the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum/Aeroventure. Info from August 2024 is that the aircraft is now owned by The Solway Aviation Museum located on Carlisle Lake District Airport and is being refurbished for display to the public.
