Douglas seaplanes were moved from the factory at Clover Field (KSMO) to the beach for their first flights. On the right is the Santa Monica Athletic Club building, near the Deauville Club and the Santa Monica Pier. The DF passenger flying boat was developed from the military XP3D. Only four DFs were built, the two DF-151s going to Japan and two DF-195s to the USSR. CCCP-N205 and N206 were delivered to Russia in the spring of 1937. On 9 August 1937 CCCP-N206 was officially registered to Polyarnaya Aviats as c/n '3', which is not an actual Douglas construction number. The flying boat was withdrawn from use in August 1946, with the fuselage surviving until the early 1960s. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The unique Walraven W-2 was designed by Dutch engineer Laurens Walraven and built by army air force personnel at Bandung, in the then Netherlands East Indies. It was commissioned by Mr Khouw Khe Hien, whose initials are in the registration. Apparently, it was little flown after its owner died in an air crash in 1938. The aircraft was destroyed during the Japanese invasion of 1942. Its paint job was blue and natural metal finish. Photo from: Walraven family album

Comparable to the Martin P5M Marlin, the Noroît (northwest wind) is another little-known French aircraft type that did see operational service. This is the first of two N.1400 prototypes, first flown on 6 January 1949. Photo assumed to have been taken early on. Some 23 N.1402 production aircraft were delivered to the Aéronavale from 1952, but suffered from unreliable Arsenal 12H engines of German origin. Apparently the type was withdrawn after a fatal crash at Bizerte, Tunisia on 2 November 1954. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Designed as a torpedo bomber, the Short 310A-4 had a powerful Sunbeam Cossack engine but still could not carry a torpedo and an observer and was flown from the rear cockpit for centre of gravity reasons. Built in 1994. It is a one-off homebuilt helicopter, built by Torstein Reinfjell. It was a trial project to see whether he could build a usable helicopter for reasonable costs, using his own theories and idea. The aircraft is made up of boat, car and aircraft parts. The build was a success and was flown several times. The project was concluded in 1999 and the aircraft was donated to the museum.

A great shot of an oddball aircraft! In Denmark, the Zonen company had already operated similar ambulance planes when their competitor Falck acquired this Turkish-built machine in 1952. The THK-5 was designed and built by the factory of Türk Hava Kurumu, the Turkish Aeronautical Association. The photo was likely taken at EKKM. The aircraft served until 1961 when it was damaged beyond repair at Aalborg. Photo by: Børge Venge / Aarhus Arkivet

Designed by Bradley Aerospace of Chico, California and built by members of local EAA Chapter 1241. Because the aircraft kit was donated to the chapter and was stored for about five years in the salt air of the Florida Keys, it has never been flown; nor has the VW engine ever been started. It is a popular attraction, especially with children, at the EAA chapter museum. It is a very good example of a kit-built experimental category aircraft.
