Developed in Sweden during WWII when buying foreign aircraft had become impossible, the J22 was a fine fighter limited by its copied R-1830 Twin Wasp engine. Photographed with my tripod placed on one of the tables put up here for a dinner - many thanks to the Flygvapenmuseum staff for their tolerance!

Saab's J21R jet fighter retained the long legs of the J21A propeller plane, and compared to the otherwise rather similar Vampire it seems to stand twice as high! This machine is actually a surviving J21A, 21286, modified to represent the extinct jet variant. 64 J21Rs were originally constructed and they were soon converted to A21R attack aircraft.

More a patrol and training aircraft than a fully fledged bomber, the Ca.313 attracted large orders from France and Britain, but these were cancelled by Italy's entry in WWII. A 900-aircraft German order also remained largely unfulfilled. Delivery of 84 machines to Sweden was completed, however. Here the Caproni was reputed to be a flying coffin. The cabin of this one does appear to be alarmingly flimsy, but this is only a non-airworthy flying replica, containing a few original parts. In fact I'm told the aircraft was quite good in itself, but suffering from unreliable engines and systems.

The Phönix D.I / D.II / D.III was an Austro-Hungarian WWI fighter based on the Hansa-Brandenburg D.I. Only a few D.IIIs were completed before the end of the war. Sweden purchased 17 of these aircraft, called Phönix 222s. Ten more were built under licence by FVM here at Malmen in 1925-1926. In 1926 the type received the J1 designation for a fighter, although it was by then used only as a trainer.

Designed by Ernst Heinkel and first flown in 1914, the Albatros B.II was the main German reconnaissance aircraft early in WWI, despite the poor view for the observer who sat in the front cockpit.
