In 1987 the Italian Army financed a capability upgrade by the installation of more powerful Lycoming T55-L-721E, new transmissions and synchro shafts, composite blades and other features, that took the MTOW from the 46000 lbs of the C model to the 50000 lbs of the D model. But the upgrade was not acknowldged by Boeing as a new model, and the painting on the fuselages remained CH-47C. The "C+" was possibly used on documents, to identify the upgraded helicopters. The photographed one could be the first upgraded machine, since it bears the new capability weight painted on its side.

This Seak King is part of the first batch of SH-3D that were initially equipped with the Teledyne AN/APN 182 doppler radar below the fuselage. In the '80s a new MM/APS-705 omnidirectional radar was retrofitted and installed below the center fuselage, being the new radar system common to the AB-212ASW. Since Vergiate was home of the Agusta plant that had the license for these Sikorsky models, this displayed helicopter could have been a just overhauled and newly retrofitted machine.

In 1987 the Italian Army ordered 24 A-109CM with the requirement to have a fixed undercarriage. The deliveries started in march 1988 and this helicopter could be the first one produced, displayed before installing the side fairings over the blocked fixed main underriage arms. 16 helicopters were identified by the Italian Army as EOA-1 for simple observation and utility duties, and 8 as EOA-2, because they were equipped with avionics to also operate in conjunction with A-129 Mangusta attack helicopters. Possibly but not confirmed MM81233, c/n 7367 to become EI-856.
