When then Rhodesia was embargoed by the United Nations, it retaliated by closing the border to Zambia, cutting off the supply lines for among other things fuel. The Zambian Government acquired two Hercules that operated in the national colours with the Zambian civil aviation ensign on the tail.

Unfortunately the photographer wasn't too concerned about this wonderful aircraft. It was 43-47050 and crashed on 11 May 1971. The three crew and two of the 29 passengers perished. Photo by: Gustav Neuenschwander / ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

When the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was dissolved in 1963, there were significant changes also in the airlines of the region. Central African Airways had been the federation's airline. Coming out of that airline, Zambia Airways, Air Malawi, and Air Rhodesia were established in the following years. CAA remained as a holding company and operated the aircraft on behalf of the three airlines. The actual operator was shown below the tail with interchangeable signs. Photographer unknown
