In the defence plans for the Netherlands East Indies, the Dornier Wal played an important role, scouting for the navy's submarines whilst operating from forward locations. The second aircraft is said to be D-40. By 1938, the Dornier Do 24 was entering service and D-39 and D-40 were both struck off charge in January 1939. The Fi 167 was designed as a torpedo bomber for Germany's projected aircraft carriers. The type passed through testing very successfully but, since the carriers were never completed, only about a dozen Fi 167s were built. Most ended up in a Croatian unit in 1944. Photo from: Bundesarchiv

No location with this photo but may be Milson aerodrome, now Palmerston North Airport. ZK-ABD was grounded there in 1938 when its damaged engine could not be repaired. It remained stored at Milson until a hangar fire destroyed it in 1953. Photo from: Whites Aviation Collection/Alexander Turnbull Library

The Arado Ar 95 was rejected as a shipborne scout for Germany's warships. Despite this registration, it was probably a much better aircraft than the Heinkel He 114 which turned out to be a failure. The Ar 95 was offered for export, but this demonstration in Norway did not yield an order. Meanwhile the lighter, faster Ar 196 monoplane was selected by the Luftwaffe for the embarked scout role - a questionable decision because in this role, robustness and seaworthiness were far more important than performance.
