Hardly beautiful, the Beaufighter was developed from the Beaufort torpedo bomber. In WWII it was used at first as a night fighter at then as a long-range strike fighter, especially against Axis shipping.

On 27th April 1942, this aircraft from 35 Squadron took off from RAF Kinloss to attack the German Battleship Tirpitz in Fættenfjord, Norway. Mines were dropped near the ship but the aircraft was hit and force landed on the frozen Lake Hoklingen. The ensuing fire caused the aircraft to sink. It was recovered in 1973 and allocated RAF maintenance serial 8465M. It is displayed with no attempt at restoration, simply conservation work having been carried out to prevent further deterioration. A magnificent and poignant exhibit.

Rather similar to the Avro Anson, the Oxford was more modern, and a dedicated multi-engine and crew trainer. Thousands of Oxfords were built for the Commonwealth air training schools during WWII. This one was built by the Standard Motors company in the spring of 1943. It was G-AITB from 1946 until retired at Perth - Scone (EGPT) by Airwork Services Training in 1961.

This aircraft is in the Battle of Britain Hall of the RAF Museum. It is very dimly lit to prevent the aircraft paint fading. Much of the lighting is being replaced with energy efficient LED lights which create this eerie effect, somehow appropriate for this gem of a night-fighter aircraft. Canon 40D, 17-40 lens, 30 sec f8

First flown in May 1917 the Dolphin fighter was an innovative design. The pilot sat with his head above the top wing, affording an excellent view, but he could not see the nose of his own aircraft and use it as a reference. Armament was no less than four machine guns, of which two fired upwards, as seen here; the latter were often removed, however. The Dolphin did well in combat, but its Hispano-Suiza engine was unreliable and troublesome, and the type was quickly retired after the end of WWI.
